A good backgammon gift is a complete board that fits how the recipient plays. At Backgammon Galaxy, we suggest a ready-to-play folding board for a new player, a tournament-size set for a club or tournament player, or a compact travel board for someone who plays on the go.

We build boards for each of those players, from our Nova tournament boards to our travel boards, and if they already own a board, our dice, doubling cubes, books and posters make good gifts. Not sure what they need? Our Gift Card lets them choose.

What Makes a Backgammon Set a Good Gift?

A gift board should be ready to play the day it is unwrapped. Before you choose, check three things:

  • Everything in the box. Make sure the set includes checkers, dice, dice cups and a doubling cube, so they can play straight away.
  • Playing surface. Look for felt, which lets checkers glide smoothly.
  • Where they will play. If the board will travel, pick something built to be carried.

Which Backgammon Gift Suits a New Player?

Someone new to the game needs a complete board that is ready to play. Our Daily Board is a medium-sized folding board with a handle, and it is ready to play out of the box with checkers, dice, a doubling cube and matching cups. It gives plenty of room to play without taking over the whole table.

Which Backgammon Set Suits a Regular or Club Player?

Give a tournament-size board. Our Nova offers the feel and proportions of a full tournament setup in a sleek, portable case that travels well to cafés and local events. The range comes in several styles, and every Nova comes with:

  • 30 checkers at 44.3 mm (1.74 in)
  • 4 dice
  • 2 dice cups
  • a matte doubling cube

Which Backgammon Set Suits a Tournament Player?

For a player who travels to tournaments, our Earth Board is tournament-size but in a space-efficient package, and its main feature is a separate tray box that combines the two bear-off trays in one unit. It fits inside the board for transport. When it is time to play, it can go on either side of the board.

If they play with us online, the layout will feel familiar: the Earth Board has the same dimensions as our online board. Every set includes:

  • removable playing surfaces
  • wooden and lightweight checker trays
  • a doubling cube
  • dice
  • two dice cups
  • 30 checkers
  • a carrying bag

Its 44.2 mm (1.74 in) marbled acrylic checkers glide on a felt-on-silicone playing surface. The checkers and dice are weighted, with a smooth-glide finish. To travel lighter, they can leave the tray box at home and pack the checkers, dice, dice cups and cube into the zipper bag inside the board. Some Earth Board styles, such as X-22 and Monte Carlo, are made in oak with the hinge on the outside.

Which Backgammon Set Suits Someone Who Travels?

A travel board has to be small enough to pack and complete enough to play anywhere. Our travel boards are built for exactly that:

  • Adventure Board. A compact solid-oak board for travel and everyday use. It comes with everything needed to play right out of the box, plus a vegan leather carry bag.
  • Adventure+ Board. A more traditional layout, with a fixed checker tray area. It fits in a suitcase or under the arm, and comes with a doubling cube, two dice cups, 30 checkers, a carrying bag and two pairs of precision dice.

What Is a Good Gift for a Backgammon Player Who Already Has a Board?

Upgrade the equipment they use every game, or give them something to wear.

  • Elite Precision Dice. They come in three sizes: the 12.7 mm dice give a light shake feeling, 14.3 mm is the popular middle choice, and 16 mm gives a chunky, heavy feel that also suits players with reduced eyesight or anyone recording matches.
  • Backgammon Doubling Cube. A doubling cube is the piece a player looks at all match. Ours is 38 mm (1.5 in) with swirling colors that change as the light moves.
  • Cosmos Cubes. These handmade cubes are also 38 mm, made from materials such as glass or stone, with a weighty feel in the hand.
  • Folding Dice Tower. It snaps into shape with magnets, folds flat in seconds and fits inside any backgammon board. Rolling with a tower saves time compared with a dice cup and keeps dice off the floor. It works only with round-corner dice, not sharp-edged dice, and it sits neatly on the Earth Board's tray box.
  • Galaxy Originals T-shirts. For a lighter gift, the shirts carry jokes only a backgammon player gets, such as "I'm a Six Addict" and "The Cubing of Adam."
